Context

SWISS FILMS is a non-profit organization aiming towards connecting their filmmakers to a global audience and leveraging their work for international opportunities. By combining content strategy, art direction, interface and interaction design, my team created a unique experience that highlighted content from their existing website.

Research

By viewing how content is organized in existing screening sites, similar elements are noted as essential. From landing page, to movie selection, to each individual film’s information page, focus was on clear hierarchies and efficient transitions.

Exploration

My team created separate mockups of what an expressive microsite could mean. We focused on highlighting cinematography by using large film stills, keeping true to Swiss roots through Studio Feixen typeface.

Goals and Insights

Realizing that we were still creating standard navigation methods we framed the project differently. How might we express cinema through content and interactions?

We aimed to evoke emotional responses within audiences by using techniques reminiscent of old-school film.

To produce a content-driven film site, we experimented with techniques that made viewers feel as if they were audience members in the cinema. While focusing on film stills to highlight each work, we pushed for different interactions.

Ideation

Surfacing Cinematography

Focusing on each feature by showcasing full-bleed visuals, the aim is for the audience to capture the portrayed emotions. The visceral imagery and continuous motion welcomes visitors to dive deeper into the film’s content.

Immersive Interactions

With full-bodied navigation techniques reminiscent of elements of film, audiences are welcomed with experiential movie montages before being presented with additional details.

Reflection

Completing an experience design project from ideation to production allowed me to practice an iterative approach. Pushing outside-of-the-box thinking to create experimental interactions is useful in making user journeys memorable.
